Have you felt like this?

You want to make health a priority but you don’t know how. You feel like it’s too late to get started and there’s never enough time anyway.

You want to deepen your relationship to your body and health but you feel clueless when it comes to what to eat, when to eat, or how. If you ate better you know it would change the way you feel.

You feel completely sluggish, stuck in the mud or you feel completely overworked and exhausted. You feel like you’d have more energy if your eating habits were different. If you had more energy you’d be more motivated at your job.

Does your self care regime kinda suck?

You know that if your relationship with your food and your body shifted, it could have a huge impact on your life. Like, total transformation: you stepping into your best self.

You can have a nourishing relationship with food and love your life too. In fact, I believe you can heal your relationship to food and start living the best version of yourself.

Food is tough. Like me, you probably grew up with a food story: which foods were healthy, which ones were tasty, which ones were good for you and which ones were naughty.

The truth is, we all hold unconscious beliefs about food, and what those beliefs say about our ability to live the life you desire is clear. Food after all, is our most basic form of sustenance. The stories we feed ourselves around food have just as great an impact on our wellbeing as the food itself.

I’m an Ayurvedic holistic health counselor and private chef. I grew up with a passion and interest in delicious food; yet I still used food as a way to control and regulate who I was. I, like many other women, told myself that if I had a different body, then I could be more. If I weighed less I would have more friends. My life would be more fulfilling. I’d be prettier and people would like me and I would feel loved. That if I looked different on the outside then I could be worthy of love.

It took me 27 years to really understand that I was worthy of love no matter how I looked in the mirror. It took me that long to start to understand that it’s normal and okay to feel bad.

When I did my first Ayurvedic cleanse, I realized “cleansing ” wasn’t about fixing myself because I was broken. Instead I got to see myself in a new light for the first time, as a person who had gone through pain, sadness and heartache. As someone who was holding onto toxicity–and my body was taking the hit. When I started to engage with my own body as a metaphor for my relationship with my self, I started to honor the cravings and desires that brought me into deeper joy. I started to cook food that I loved to eat as much as I loved to prepare it, I started to listen to my cravings and understand what my body’s greater needs were.

Ayurveda has taught me how to dig into those stories of hurt and discomfort in order to better know myself. Ayurveda means “life knowledge”, and that’s exactly what I gain more of as I practice the skills of aligning to my highest self.

So often we attach some esoteric, enlightened meaning to the word “healthy”. Health is this thing that other people have and you don’t. Skinny people, people with better lives, smarter people, people who are more organized, or put together, or who don’t have my problems are healthy. We believe that if you just follow this diet method, this exercise regime, then you can transcend your current, crappy state of life and get “better”.

The word for health in Sanskrit is “svasta,” meaning, “to be seated in One’s Self.” Ayurveda teaches you how to access the greatest version of you by attuning to both your strengths and your weaknesses. When living an Ayurvedic lifestyle, you learn to access the knowledge of who you are, what foods, what habits, what routines will nourish you and understanding which ones are not serving you so much.

This is really hard to do if you are so far out of touch that you are telling yourself in some way, I’m not worthy. I know, because I’ve been there. I went through a shocking divorce–one of the most difficult things I’ve ever faced in my life–and I started to slip back into that thought pattern. I’m a piece of sh*t because I stopped feeling good about myself and my life is hard. Rather than losing myself in the typical pattern of eating and starvation that historically came from this story, I actively chose to be present to my needs: no matter how unusual, uncomfortable, or radical they seemed. I let myself have all of my feelings, and I got to eat cake too. Because usually the best way to heal is to really listen and be present, and to offer a little sweetness where it seems like there’s none.

When people participate in my cleanse, they always remark upon how much self-knowledge they gain through the process. Most people hear the word “cleanse” and expect another restrictive, dieting, weight loss program.

I can guarantee that you will shed some unwanted weight: the weight of stress, of feeling under-nourished, under-loved, under-cared for. This cleanse invites you to gain energy, vitality, and a love for your own life. Cooking for yourself will feel like a gift rather than a chore.

It’s up to you to create your own life. I’ve watched so many struggle with eating because they just don’t care; a story that comes from lack of inspiration. Put your food where your heart is; step into this sweet invitation to transform and heal your relationship to food.

Dinner by Hannah Gruber at Elephant Belly in Coldspring Harbor, NY.

I’m Hannah Gruber. I’m an Ayurvedic Holistic Health Counselor, Private Chef, Yoga Instructor and Brooklynite. I’m the kind of person to take on more than I can humanly handle, and I was overworked and exhausted at age 20. In addition, I was asthmatic, I had debilitating allergies and digestive issues that were causing me pain. I was addicted to prescriptions and medicines to keep my symptoms at bay.  I wanted more free time, more laughter, more freedom to feel at home in my own body. But I felt trapped and stuck. I was doing all the things that I thought were “normal”: working a full-time job, going to school and taking 21 credit hours a semester, participating and organizing several clubs, and spending my free time taking dance classes. I was sleeping irregularly, eating on the go, drinking several cups of coffee daily, and falling asleep at random times throughout the day because I was so exhausted. I felt unfulfilled. Like there was something missing in my life. But, I kept adding in more and more, moving back and forth between eating my emotions via pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream and dieting so I could look good in my dance leotard. My asthma didn’t go away, my allergies seemed to be getting worse. My periods started becoming more and more painful. I had emotional outbreaks when I least expected it, because I was holding so much inside, and piling on more and more.

I moved from St. Louis to New York city, and I was so excited to be a bicycle commuter. I was on the bike path along Prospect Park one beautiful fall day, and I started to panic as I began to wheeze. I didn’t have my inhaler. I pulled over and did some simple breathing techniques that I had learned in yoga. I was able to pacify my breathing, but I booked an appointment with an allergist immediately.

At her office, she recommended I take several different prescriptions daily, nasal spray, an anti-histamine, decongestant, and carry around an Epi-pen as well as an inhaler. I was a walking pharmacy. On a whim I asked her if there were any alternative solutions I could try, natural medications like herbs or other techniques. She looked at me and rolled my eyes, and I explained how I had assuaged my asthma attack.

The look of disbelief on her face was enough for me not to schedule a follow-up appointment. And from that point I knew I would have to take matters into my own hands.
I had heard of Ayurveda through my study of yoga. I always loved to cook, and as a full-time grad student with a full-time job living in Brooklyn I knew that I could use some self-care tools to help with my work-life-school balance. I re-oriented my priorities, I couldn’t let myself suffer without making an effort to change. One day it occurred to me how AWFUL it would be if our biology was designed to create suffering. The potential for success must be inherent in my body.

I started through self-study. I read books and articles on Ayurveda, and I started to pay attention to my own body. How different foods made me feel, how my energy levels were different when my sleeping routine was different. I noticed a direct correlation between consistency: having the same daily routine, bedtime, eating meals at the same time, and an improvement in my energy levels as well as my general health. My need for stress-relieving cushions like chocolate and ice cream and alcohol decreased, while my ability to honor my body’s needs increased. I decided to integrate a formal study of Ayurveda into my life, and I tried Panchakarma, and Ayurvedic “cleanse” and rejuvenation, for the first time.

Guided by a wonderful teacher and with an exceptional group of like-minded people, I felt extremely safe and supported to try things I had never tried before. I found the courage to ask my body what it needed, and to LISTEN to my body more honestly than I ever had before. In that first short cleanse, I learned more about my body’s ability to digest, metabolise, assimilate and eliminate than I had ever thought possible. I discovered the wildness of my tastebuds, attuned to the sensitivities taste, smell, touch, sight and sound, and developed a love and appreciation for food that was unprecedented in my life. I already loved food and eating, but I started to play around more freely in my kitchen with greater confidence and ease.

Just a few years later, I would be featured on a Food Network cooking show.

Practicing an Ayurvedic cleanse seasonally gave me the tools to evaluate my body and my life and to re-orient my eating and habits according to my highest priorities. Western medicine taught me that there is no Solution and in fact there is no Problem. Those beliefs are simply rooted in our culture as the unattainable ideals of beauty and perfection. In my own heart, I always knew that the images of flawlessness and thinness that I was looking at had nothing to do with the joy that comes with living according to one’s own rules. And yet for years I was stuck in the cycle of trying to be less so I could feel more. I discovered that diving more deeply into my own mind-body connection, learning to listen to my body and my environment in ever more refined ways, provides the skills to live a life of expanded sensibility, knowledge, deeper grounding and clarity; essentially, a life filled with greatness. I have the courage and the confidence to take matters into my own hands when I notice something feels “off,” and I now bring so much joy and happiness into the lives of not only friends and family, but to strangers as well through cooking and food. I’ve watched others access their strengths and tap into their own creativity through these practices.

For as long as you can recall, you’ve lived with stress, exhaustion, lack of sleep, and all the “symptoms” that  always get brushed off as “nothing” because you don’t have time to deal with them. You’ve been to doctors and taken prescriptions; and while they help in the moment, you know they won’t solve the problem and may leave you with more side effects that you started with. You remember a time in your life when you felt better: life was good, you felt strong, healthy and beautiful. But now the demands of life–your job and career, your family and commitments–create complete OVERWHELM and there’s no one left to care for you.

The one thing you want the most? To be able to give yourself the care and attention you crave, to feed yourself with the right foods that nourish YOUR body–not the fad foods featured in the latest craze diet. You know that great health starts with what’s essential: food and daily habits. But it’s confusing to sort through all of the food trends and methods. You long for the support and comfort that comes from sustainable and easy to maintain strategies and techniques.

This cleanse meets you where you are today: perfectly imperfect, uniquely you, with all of the beautifully distinct traits that make you stand out. In this 21-day transformational workshop, you’ll discover how to transform your biggest obstacles into the inspiration, confidence, energy, and well-being that you desire. Discover your PERSONAL constitution and the foods that equip YOUR BODY with the nourishment for better digestion, beautiful skin, deeper sleep, and glowing energy. By deepening your relationship to food, you will be less controlled by the whims of your stomach and attain a higher level of consciousness.

What is a cleanse? How is it different than a diet or juice fast? Wait--this isn't a juice fast, is it???

I’ve never cleansed before, I have no idea what this means.

According to Eastern medicine, the choices we make in our daily lives have the ability to influence our health–physical, mental, and emotional. Food and environment may either positively or negatively affect our well-being. Many factors in modern life create excess toxicity in the body, contributing to allergies, colds, headaches, fatigue, digestive discomfort, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, and more. In order to bring the body back into balance, it is helpful to clean out the toxicity and make room for the body’s innate ability to thrive. Cleansing improves immunity, it reduces stored waste in the body, and it leaves you feeling overall awake, vibrant, and alive.

Rooted in the wisdom of Ayurveda, this 3-step detox focuses on releasing the toxins your body takes in from day-to-day interactions with metals, chemicals found in cleaning products, food, drink, etc.

Ayurveda focuses on improving your digestion.

You’ll only eat whole, seasonal foods that support your body’s natural processes of detoxification and cleansing.

Embark on a delicious adventure of discovery and releasing what’s no longer serving you – both physically and emotionally- and access freedom of body and mind.

Why should I cleanse?

You know deep in your heart that your relationship to food could use an adjustment. Something is off, not quite aligned.

Do you feel like you need more discipline to create better habits?

Do you want healthier cravings?

Do you want to find and maintain your ideal body weight?

Do you long to wake up feeling energized, on top of the world, and at ease in your daily routines?

Do you need more time to take better care of your self?

The Ayurvedic Cleanse is about investing in your SELF: creating the time, the space to open yourself up to honoring your body and healing your relationship to food. If you want better intuition and knowledge about which foods are ideal for your constitution, if you want to discover the root cause of why you feel sluggish, stuck in the mud, unmotivated, low energy, sleep-deprived, or why you experience GI problems, headaches, breakouts, constipation or loose stools, or even just a general feeling of unwellness, this cleanse will guide you to better listen to your body and feed yourself exactly what you need to get back on the right foot!

The Cleanse is being offered in 2 locations: Abhaya Yoga in Dumbo and YogaSole in Windsor Terrace (both in Brooklyn).

There are 2 workshops: September 10 & 17 (Abhaya Yoga) and September 11 & 18 (YogaSole).

Attendance IS NOT mandatory to participate in the Cleanse! The workshops are offered to support and guide you as you work your way through the step-by-step program and guidebook that I have created for you. You can still participate in the cleanse EVEN IF you can’t make the workshops.

You don’t have to do ANYTHING before the workshop.

We will go over all the questions you have about cleansing, how to do it right, how to make it your own. We will learn principles of Ayurveda, and you will learn how to determine your unique constitution. Based on your life’s schedule and demands, you will be able to customize the cleanse to get the MOST out of it and still meet your own needs. You will also receive the cleanse packet with ALL the information and recipes in it. We’ll also discuss how your yoga practice can support your cleanse and help you to succeed.

Do you supply the recipes?

Absolutely! I wrote all of the recipes, and I promise you will be surprised at how amazing your food will taste! You may follow the schedule as carefully or as freely as you like. The cleanse is designed to fit your lifestyle and give you the calories you need to make it through the day. Let’s face it: you may need to take your cleanse food with you to the office. You can choose the recipes that let you move at your own speed.

Will I be starving or only drinking juice?

Definitely not. You will be able to eat as much food as your body needs. There is no juicing involved, as Ayurveda works to gently break down toxins in your body and then restore your body’s energy and strength to its normal levels. The foods and practices on the cleanse will leave you feeling nourished, energized, and satisfied.

How does the cleanse work?

We will begin with a 1 week pre-cleanse, focusing on whole foods mostly vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and good quality fats like ghee and coconut oil. During the first week, you have plenty of time to plan your schedule, plan your menu, create some downtime and space in your life so that you can fully enjoy the deeply rejuvenating effects of your cleanse.

During the main cleanse, you will choose foods that help your body to release the toxicity and weight of stress, emotion, pollution, and years of undernourishment.

The final week of the cleanse is dedicated to helping your body rebuild and rejuvenate and acclimate to an everyday lifestyle and diet. This is the most important part of the cleanse because you will solidify the practices you have been using over the past couple weeks to create habits that are sustaining.

Each part of the cleanse is broken down into stages so that you have the chance to move slowly enough to truly stay present and deeply honor your body the entire way through the process.

What are the phone calls?

Over the course of the cleanse, there will be 2 live teleconference calls. In each call, we will go over the daily cleanse schedule, including the how and why of each of the cleanse practices. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about anything that comes up for you during the cleanse.

What if I can’t attend the live workshop?

Don’t worry. All the information you need is in the cleanse packet, and you can always send me a message via our Facebook group at anytime.

What if I still have questions about how to DO the cleanse after the first call?

You will have access to an exclusive Facebook group where you can post your questions. I will be checking it each day and will respond to all your questions as soon as I can. Also, there are 3 additional calls throughout the cleanse. On the second call we will talk about our progress, challenges and discoveries and to move forward. Our last call will focus on how to transition from cleanse mode back into everyday life.

I’m still not sure if the cleanse is right for me.

Send me an email and we will schedule a free 15 minute one-on-one phone conversation where you can ask me any questions about the cleanse.

How do I know if the cleanse is right for me?

All are welcome, from first-time cleansers to people with more experience. I will lead you deeper into your intuition, your body, and your kitchen. This cleanse is about participation, learning, and community support. As a group we will meet 4 times. Our first meeting is a LIVE workshop where you will discover what your body needs to cleanse, and I will guide your through a cleanse that works for your lifestyle, the amount of time and energy you have, and your level of experience.

You can start wherever you are at.

Honestly, some people start the detox as coffee-drinkers, who eat every meal out or maybe completely forget to eat. Others start with a zen-like clarity and yogic-like inner body purity. There is room for all. This cleanse is for people who want to create sustainable habits that will shift their health for the long-haul. Together, we will all shift our own heath.

For the beginning cleansers you’ll get a huge shift in awakening to what your body wants at the next evolution of your mind/body intelligence. It’s an amazing process – letting go of what is outdated, including outdated cravings. You’ll feel your body getting smarter, getting heard, and you’ll be better able to meet the deeper needs of your body. Your cravings will become more intelligent. You’ll get better self-care habits. It’s magical.
